How to come to your Senses

Connecting with your senses is an excellent way of becoming more present with the world around you.

Connecting with your senses is an excellent way of becoming more present with the world around you.

Sensory perception involves detecting, recognising, characterising, and responding to the external world.

There are five different kinds of stimulus. They can be categorised as mechanical, chemical, electrical, light, and temperature.

Sensory perception begins when something in the physical world stimulates our sense organs.

Consciously connecting with your sense perceptions throughout the day is an excellent way of bringing you into the present moment to observe what you are seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting, and smelling.

Meditation is an ideal time to be still so that you can connect with your senses fully without
distraction.

Exercise

Try sitting still for 10 minutes with your eyes closed and connecting with each of your senses:

  • What do you see?
  • What sounds do you hear?
  • How do your clothes feel on your body, your feet on the ground, and your bum in your seat?
  • What can you taste in your mouth?
  • Are there any smells you can identify in your environment?
  • Then try to connect with them all at once to make you fully present.

What does this experience show you about how you relate to your environment?
